The message of the story is praiseworthy. Water is essential for all living beings. In the absence of water our life is impossible as this natural asset is limited on the earth. We have to think over how we can save ourselves in the condition of drought. When drought visits any area we have no crops. We are bound to face starvation. We also decide to leave the area and migrate to the towns and cities in search of jobs. The author tries to make people aware of droughts. He teaches people how this precious water can be saved. He wants to save the villagers from starvation.

Trees play a great role in conserving water. They improve air and water quality. They provide shade to the landscape and reduce water needs. They help keep our home cooler. They slow storm water runoff and help recharge groundwater. It stops water depletion and raises the water level. Hence water supply is increased.Trees reduce soil erosion. Shade from trees slows water evaporation from thirsty lawns. As they transpire, they increase atmospheric moisture also.

Question 3.
What is rain water harvesting?
Answer.
Water is a most precious natural resource. We get it from nature by the water cycle. Living beings cannot live without water. Human beings are becoming aware of the importance of water for their survival. Its supply is limited specially in dry areas. The harvesting of rainwater simply involves the collection of water from surfaces on which rain falls. This rain water is stored in a water tank for later use. The water tank is commonly constructed under the ground. We use it in our normal routine. Water is collected from the roofs of buildings and stored in rainwater tanks. This is very common in rural Australia. Water can also be collected in dams from rain falling on the ground and producing runoff.

Question 4.
What was the resolution of the villagers?
Answer.
The villagers decided to save water. They were determined to start a movement to conserve the precious water. They became aware that there is sufficient water on the earth. They only needed to train people in the management of water. The young people would be trained first of all. Then, they would train the entire villagers. They did not want to lose their time. They started their work of training in water management from the very day one. The rising sun gave them hope and rekindled their enthusiasm.

Activity

Question 1.
Working in groups of four, make a list of the various methods of water conservation. Write an article on water conservation.
Answer.
Water Conservation
Water is one of our most precious resources. Every living being needs water to survive. Water conservation means using less water or recycling used water so that it can be used again. This type of program is important because water conservation helps save energy, protect wild animals, and prevent people from using so much water that it cannot be replaced with rain. Water conservation also helps people and governments save money.

There are numerous ways to make our water go further. One easy method is to check the misuse of this precious water. We should develop a habit to use it twice. Unlike electricity, water can be reused over and over again. Water is used in both our house and yard, but we often like to use it once. Rain harvesting is easy but it can be expensive and can involve a change of lifestyle. However, we should make every effort to save water.

Question 1.
What lesson does the story teach you?
Answer.
The story portrays a true nature of man. It has a deep meaning which narrates that a man is satisfied when he is poor and is contented with all he possessed. The moment he has excess of wealth, he loses the true value of his wealth and give in to vice. He goes beyond the limits to seek pleasure out of it. The story not only amuses us but it also guides us against the danger of alcohol consumption.

Question 2.

Answer.
The imp gets success in his plan to corrupt the gentle peasant by providing him more of wealth than he actually needed. He then guided the peasant to crush the spare grain to make vodka which made him a filthy man.

“The blood of wild animal is always present in men”. Explain.
Answer.
The blood of wild animals is always in men means that as long as men have only as much as he needed, he remains contented and confined to his limits. But the moment men have spare wealth, he outrageously spoils all relations in a search of artificial amusement which last only for a short span of time but leaves a very deep effect on oneself and people around.

Yes, it is only the effect of the vodka which made the peasants bewildered. The alcohol made them unconscious and turned them into a beast. Intake of alcohol on a regular routine or too much occasionally takes a serious toll an our health. It interferes with the functioning of our brain with loss of memory, capacity to retain and interpret. It may cause heart attacks, strokes, liver related diseases, inflammation and swelling of blood vessels, weaken the immune system with further degradation of human body. It not only affects our health but also destroys the close and cordial relations between human beings. It has a very bad effect on society.

This went on for three or four days.

The first day after the food had stopped, Dursun’s family kept up their hopes till noon for the arrival of food from a neighbour. But at supper time, they realised that no one was going to give them food any more, they had to cook at home as they had done before. But after a few days all food stuffs at their home finished. They went to bed on empty stomachs. Then Gulnaz tried to buy two loaves of bread from a bread-seller. But he did not even take notice of her. Then she sent her son to Bodos, the grocer, to borrow some grocery items, but he also refused.

Question 2.
How did the older boy try to convince Bodos for grocery items?
Answer.
Dursun’s family did not eat anything for a few days. They were feeling extremely hungry. Finally, Gulnaz beckoned to the older boy and told him to go to Bodos, the grocer, to borrow some grocery items. The boy went there and told the shopkeeper to give him some grocery items. He put his hand into his pocket as if reaching for his money and then pretended to have left it at home. He told the shopkeeper that he did not like to go home in such cold weather to bring money. He told him to write it down and he would pay the next day. But the shopkeeper understood his trick and did not give any grocery item.

Question 3.
What were the difficulties faced by the older boy due to chilly weather?
Answer.

After two hours, the trembling ended. Then came the fever and the exhaustion. Gulnaz lifted the covers and tried to cool the burning with her cold hands. His cheeks were burning and he talked in delirium. With the passage of time, his fever increased. His mother was unable to think what to do.

Question 4.
What happened after the older boy returned home empty handed?
Answer.
When the boy returned home empty handed, he took off his clothes and went to his bed. Then he said he was feeling extremely cold. Actually, he had caught a cold. His body was trembling. His mother put blanket and whatever clothes she could find there on his body. After two hours, the trembling of his body came to an end but he caught high fever. His mother tried to cool the burning body with her cold hands. His fever was increasing. His mother was not able to understand what to do.

Question 1.
“Poverty is a curse”, Do you agree with the statement? How did it affect Dursun’s family? Discuss.
Answer.
There is no deying the fact that “poverty is a curse’. People have to face many kinds of difficulties due to poverty. Many people suffering from serious illness die due to their poverty. Many babies suffer from physical deformity because they do not get required nutrition due to poverty. The poor are subjected to humiliation in society.

When Dursun died, his family had to cope with very grave situation. No one in their society helped them. They had to spend several days on empty stomach. Even the grocer did not lend him any food item because of being poor. The family were going to die only because of their poverty. If Dursun’s family had money, they did not have to face such a serious condition.
