Jigyasa is asking you that-

Question 1.
Do you feel any change in the weather of your city?
Answer:
Yes, in my city (Jaipur), weather changes with the seasons. In summer (March-June) the temperature is 35°-45°C, there is bright sunlight and dry wind. In monsoon (July-September) it rains, the temperature is 25°-35°C and humidity increases. In winter (November-February) the temperature is 5°-20°C, cold winds blow and there is fog. Here people wear clothes according to the weather and change their diet. Due to change in climate, untimely rains or variations in temperatures are also seen here.

Question 2.
Which cities come on the way from Jaisalmer to Mount Abu?
Answer:
The children reached Jaisalmer railway station by bus from Mohangarh near Jaisalmer. They arrived Abu Road by train and from here they were taken by bus towards the hills of Mount Abu. Possible major cities or places that might come in the way are :

  • Jaisalmer (starting point)
  • Barmer or Jodhpur (possible cities on the rail route)
  • Pali or Marwar Junction (places on the rail route).
  • Abu Road (last railway station).

Page 55
Activity-1

A. How did weather change on the way from Mohangarh to Mount Abu? Discuss and write.
Answer:
Discussion and Explanation:
Mohangarh (Weather in Jaisalmer)-

  • At the beginning of the trip the children felt hot and dry weather conditions.
  • There was bright sunshine and hot winds which is characteristic of the desert region.
  • Dust and sand were flying in the air due to which children started rubbing their eyes, everyone was feeling thirsty again and again.
  • There were high sand dunes and arid landscape spread all around.
  • This was a sign of summer season with high temperature and low humidity.

While travelling by train from Jaisalmer-

  • As the train departed from Jaisalmer, children could see only desert landscape (yellow and golden sand).
  • As the train moved further some green plants and trees were also visible.
  • This change indicates that the weather and environment were becoming less dry and greener.
  • As we reached near Abu Road, the weather started getting slightly cold. As the sun set, a cold breeze started blowing, due to which the children took out their shawls and sweaters.
  • This was an indication of increased coolness and humidity in the weather.

Abu Road to Mount Abu (Journey by bus)-

  • As the bus started moving towards the heights of the mountains, the air has become cooler.
  • There were lush green forests, tall trees, lakes and green hills all around.
  • The atmosphere was calm, moist and refreshing which was a complete contrast of Jaisalmer’s climate.
  • Some children felt slight cold and wore sweaters.
  • This indicated the beginning of cold weather with low temperature humidity.

Conclusion-Children experienced contrasting season (hot and cold) in the same state (Rajasthan) which shows the temporary nature of weather and the impact of seasons.

Unusual changes in the seasons such as irregular rainfall, extreme heat or long winters are a cause of concern. These changes can be result of climate change. Climate change is the result of human activities such as deforestation, use of fossil fules etc. Irregular rainfall can destroy crops and leading to food crisis. Extreme heat causes heat waves which is harmful for health.

For example, in recent years summer temperature in India have exceeded 45°C, much higher than normal. On the other hand long winters or unexpected cold also affect crops and human life. These changes also harm biodiversity as plants and animals depend on seasonal cycles.

Travel by Train-The journey started by train from Jaisalmer. The yellow sand of the desert gradually transformed into green trees and plants. Children felt cold weather near Abu Road. As the sun set, a cool breeze started blowing, children wore shawls and sweaters.

Arrival in Mount Abu-Children reached Mount Abu by bus from Abu Road. They saw green forests, tall trees, lakes and green hills all around. The atmosphere was calm, moist and refreshing. It was opposite to the hot and dry weather of Jaisalmer. The children decided to write their experiences in their diary.

Weather and its types:

Adaptations and Seasons:

Causes of Adaptations

  • Change in temperature-Sweating in summer, protection from cold in winters.
  • Availability of food-Some creatures migrate or hibernate due to lack of food in winters (such as-lizard) and creature like-snakes, frogs etc. hide in ground.
  • Availability of water-Less activity in body to save water in summers.
  • Reproduction and growth-Reproduce in a particular season.
  • Livelihood and lifestyle-Human beings also change their clothing, food habits and daily activities according to the weather.

Adaptation according to different seasons-

Summer Season

  • Animals-Camel stores food as fat, dogs and wolves keep their bodies cool by sticking out their tongue, some organisms go into hibernation.
  • Plants-Cactus saves water by converting its leaves into thorns, mango, litchi ripe in summers.
  • Humans-Wear light clothes, drink cold drinks, avoid going out in the afternoon.

Winter Season

  • Animals-Fat layer protects from cold (Polar bears, penguins), hibernation (Bears, snakes and squirrels), migration (Siberian cranes).
  • Plants-Evergreen trees remain green (cedar, pines), whereas some trees shed their leaves (gulmohar).
  • Humans-Wear woolen clothes, eat hot food, use bonfires and heaters.

Rainy Season

  • Animals-Frogs, earthworms become more active, mosquitoes, insects breed rapidly, water birds use their waterproof feathers.
  • Plants-Paddy and sugarcane grow rapidly, moss and mold are common on wet surfaces.
  • Humans-Use umbrellas, rain coats, avoid wet places, eat hot and dry food.

Scientific basis of climate and weather

  • Weather pattern are caused by the sun.
  • Long term averages of weather patterns create climate zone.
  • Changes in the earth’s rotation or axial tilt affect weather patterns.

Conclusion:

  • Weather and seasons both affect plants, animals and humans.
  • Adaptation is necessary for the survival of all living beings.
  • Through the travel experience, children experienced different climates and natural environments in the same state.
