Convert the given fraction in to equivalent fraction by multiplying numerator and denominator by 2.

Solution.
(i) \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } =\frac { 1\times 2 }{ 2\times 2 } =\frac { 2 }{ 4 } \)
(ii) \(\frac { 2 }{ 3 } =\frac { 2\times 2 }{ 3\times 2 } =\frac { 4 }{ 6 } \)
(iii) \(\frac { 1 }{ 5 } =\frac { 1\times 2 }{ 5\times 2 } =\frac { 2 }{ 10 } \)

\(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } =\frac { 1\times 4 }{ 4\times 4 } =\frac { 4 }{ 16 } \)
\(=\frac { 1\times 5 }{ 4\times 5 } =\frac { 5 }{ 20 } \)
\(=\frac { 1\times 6 }{ 4\times 6 } =\frac { 6 }{ 24 } \)
∴ \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) = \(\frac { 2 }{ 8 } \) = \(\frac { 3 }{ 12 } \) = \(\frac { 4 }{ 16 } \) = \(\frac { 5 }{ 20 } \) = \(\frac { 6 }{ 24 } \)

Write four equivalent fractions of \(\frac { 1 }{ 5 } \)
Solution.
\(\frac { 1 }{ 5 } =\frac { 1\times 2 }{ 5\times 2 } =\frac { 2 }{ 10 } \)
\(=\frac { 1\times 3 }{ 5\times 3 } =\frac { 3 }{ 15 } \)
\(=\frac { 1\times 4 }{ 5\times 4 } =\frac { 4 }{ 20 } \)
\(=\frac { 1\times 5 }{ 5\times 5 } =\frac { 5 }{ 25 } \)
∴\(\frac { 1 }{ 5 } \) = \(\frac { 2 }{ 10 } \) = \(\frac { 3 }{ 15 } \) = \(\frac { 4 }{ 20 } \) = \(\frac { 5 }{ 25 } \)

Question 8.
Ranu bought 6 meter long ribbon from market, if she equally divides it between 4 friends, then what is the length of ribbon each friend will get ?
Solution.
6 meter long ribbon = 4 meter + 2 meter On dividing among 4 friends each will get 1 meter ribbon out of 4 meter Now, out of 2 meter = 1 + 1
= \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) + \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) + \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) + \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \)
That is four friends will get \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) or half meter or one by 2 meter ribbon each.
Therefore, in 6 meter ribbon each will get 1 + \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) = 1 \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) meter long ribbon.

Saraswati needs 1 \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) meter of cloth to make a shirt. How much cloth she needs to make two such shirts ?
Solution.
Cloth required for 1 shirt = 1 \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) meter (one and quarter)
∴ Cloth required for 2 shirts = 1 \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) + 1 \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) meter
= 1 + \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) + 1 + \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) meter
= 1 + 1 + \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) + \(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } \) meter
= 2 + \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) meter
= 2 \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \) meter
