What was the beggar’s condition in the beginning?
आरम्भ में भिखारी की क्या दशा थी?
Answer:
In the beginning, the beggar begged from door to door.
आरम्भ में भिखारी घर-घर जाकर भीख मांगता था।

Question 2.
Why did the beggar think that his bad days were over ?
भिखारी ने क्यों सोचा कि उसके बुरे दिन समाप्त हो गये हैं?
Answer:
When the beggar saw a king coming in a golden chariot, he thought that his bad days were over.
जब भिखारी ने एक राजा को सोने के रथ में आते हुए देखा तो वह सोचने लगा कि उसके बुरे दिन समाप्त हो गये हैं।

Question 3.
What did the poet (beggar) expect of the king?
कवि (भिखारी) ने राजा से क्या अपेक्षा की थी?
Answer:
The poet (beggar) expected of the king to scatter his wealth for all the needy persons.
भिखारी राजा से अपेक्षा करता था कि वह अपना धन सभी जरूरतमन्द लोगों में बिखेर दे।

Question 4.
When did the poet think that his luck had come at last ? Why ?
कवि ने कब सोचा कि आखिरकार उसका भाग्य खुल गया है? क्यों ?
Answer:
When the king came down and looked at the poet with a smile, he thought that his luck had come and the king would make him rich.
जब राजा रथ से नीचे उतरकर आया और उसने कवि की ओर मुस्कुराते हुए देखा तो उसने सोचा कि उसका भाग्य खुल गया है और राजा उसे धनवान बना देगा।

Question 5.
Why did the beggar remain a beggar at the end ?
भिखारी अन्त में भी भिखारी ही क्यों रहा?
Answer:
The beggar was greedy. So he could not enjoy, God’s grace. Thus, he remained a beggar at the end.
भिखारी लालची व्यक्ति था। इसलिए वह ईश्वर की कृपा का आनन्द नहीं उठा पाया। इस प्रकार वह अन्त में भी भिखारी ही रहा।

Activity II

Question 1.
Find the lines from the poem expressing these emotions and write them :
कविता में उन पंक्तियों को ढूंढिए जो निम्न भाव प्रकट करती हैं तथा उन्हें लिखिए –

  1. wonder
  2. hope
  3. confusion
  4. greed
  5. surprise
  6. sorrow.

  1. Wonder : And I wondered who was this king of all kings!
  2. hope : I thought my bad days were over.
  3. confusion : You held out your hand and said, “What have you to give me ?”
  4. greed : I bitterly wept and wished. That I had had the heart to give you all I had.

  6. sorrow : I bitterly wept and wished.

Write the Hindi meanings of the words given in Question No. 1 above.

  3. confusion = उलझन,परेशानी।

Activity III

Question 1.
Suppose the king narrates the story, how will you write it ?
मान लो वह राजा इस कहानी को कहता है, इसे आप कैसे लिखेंगे ?
You may begin like this :
आप इस प्रकार प्रारम्भ कर सकते हैं –
It was a different day for me. I got into my chariot and went to a village. There I saw a beggar ……………..

It was a different day for me. I got into my chariot and went to a village. There I saw a beggar. He was begging from door to door. Seeing me, he stood at a place. I went to him and got down from my chariot with a smile. His face was beaming with hope and joy. To his surprise, I spread out my hand and said, “What have you to give me?” For a moment, he stood undecided. Then, from his little bag, he took out two grains of corn and gave them to me. When, in the evening, he emptied his bag on the floor, he was surprised to find two grains of gold in the heap. He bitterly wept and cursed himself why he had not given all the grains of corn to me.

Activity IV

Divide the class into three groups, ask them to read the given poem within the group and then to recite it before the class. Ask oral questions at the end of this activity.

The poet asks us to be optimistic.

हमें जीवन में किस चीज की आवश्यकता है?

We need adopt positive thinking.
हमें रचनात्मक सोच अपनाने की आवश्यकता है।

हमें क्या छोड़ देना चाहिये?

We should leave negative thinking.
हमें नकारात्मक सोच को छोड़ देना चाहिये।

We made things right because of our optimistic thinking.
अपनी सोच को आशावादी बनाकर हमने चीजों को ठीक कर लिया।

आपको जीवन में सफलता कैसे मिली?

We got success in life through optimism.
हमें आशावाद के जरिये जीवन में सफलता मिली।

Question 7.
Discuss in groups and speak about the advantages of optimistic thought/ positive thought/good thought.
समूह में चर्चा करो और आशावादी सोच/सकारात्मक सोच/ अच्छी सोच के लाभ बताओ।.
Answer:
Dear classmates. Good thoughts are our best friends. Noble thoughts keep us polite and gentle in our behaviour. Optimistic thoughts always keep us hopeful. We always look at the bright side of everything. In failure, we seek hope. We try again with fresh zeal and new hope. We remain cheerful and make others cheerful. We always feel hale and hearty. There is no room for evil thoughts, like jealousy and hatred. If we have evil thoughts, they first harm us. We become revengeful.
So let us be optimistic and build a world of health, joy and peace.

हिन्दी अनुवाद – एक गांव के रास्ते पर (गलियों में) मैं दर-दर भीख के लिये निकला । तब अचानक मेरी आंखों के सामने दूरी पर आपका सुनहरा रथ एक भव्य स्वप्न के समान आया और मैं जानने को उत्सुक हो गया कि यह राजाओं का राजा कौन है? मेरी आशायें बहुत बढ़ गईं और मैंने सोचा कि मेरे बुरे दिन समाप्त हो गये हैं। मैं भीख की प्रतीक्षा में वह खड़ा हो गया और उस धन की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा जो इधर-उधर सब जगह बिखेरा जाएगा या बाँटा जायेगा।
