There are three national parks in Rajasthan-
1. Keoladeo National Park-This is located in Bharatpur district. Here, birds like Siberian crane, heron, weaver bird, koel, quail, etc. are found.

2. Ranthambore National Park- This park is situated in the Sawai Madhopur district and famous for Indian tiger. Besides tiger, wild animals like bear, spotted dear, sambar, blue buck, crocodile, etc. are also found here.

3. Mukundra Hills National Park- This park is located in the district of Kota and Chittorgarh. Wild animals like tiger, sloth bear, hyena, jackal, wolf, sambar, spotted dear, blue buck, Indian gazelle are found here.

What targets are set in Rajasthan’s New State Forest Policy 2023? What actions are the state government and various organizations taking to conserve forests?
Answer:
In Rajasthan, in the New State Forest Policy 2023, there is a target to cover 20 percent of the total land area, but in Rajasthan, only 10 percent area is covered with forest. Therefore to promote forest conservation, the state government and various organizations have launched awareness campaigns.

Tree cutting in forests has been banned, and initiatives like tree plantation, development of grazing grassland, and social forestry are underway. The CAZRI and AFRI institutes in Jodhpur research on improving forests and wildlife in arid areas. The government is currently running the ‘Hariyalo Rajasthan’ programme focused on tree planting.

Describe the Khejarli move¬ment led by Amrita Devi in 1730 AD to protect trees.
Answer:
In 1730 AD, in the Khejarli village of Rajasthan, Khejarli trees were being cut for the construction of Maharaja Abhay Singh’s palace. In protest, 363 men and women, led by Amrita Devi, sacrificed their lives by embracing the trees to protect them. A deer park has been established here in memory of this incident. The world’s only tree fair is held every year on Bhadrapada Shukla Dashami in Khejarli village.

How many types of forests are there in Rajasthan? Describe them.
Answer:
About ten per cent of the total area of Rajasthan is covered with forest. Forests have been divided into three categories on administrative basis-

1. Reserved Forests-These forests are under government control. Due to their environmental importance, grazing of animals and cutting of trees is prohibited in this area. These constitute more than one-third of the total forest area.

2. Protected Forests-These forests are also under government control. Under certain regulations, permission is given for cutting of trees and animal grazing. These types of forests cover more than half of the total forest area.

3. Unclassified Forests—In this category of forests, there is no government restriction on grazing animals or cutting of trees.

Classify the forests of Rajasthan on geographical basis.
Answer:
There are three types of forests on geographical basis in Rajasthan-
1. Tropical Thorny Forests-These are found in arid and semi-arid regions such as Bikaner, Churu, Jaisalmer, Banner, Balotra, Nagaur, Deedwana-Kuchaman, Jodhpur, Falaudi, Sikar, Jhunjhunu, etc., districts. In these forests, thorny trees and shrubs are found. Major trees found here are Rohida, Khejadi, Dhaukra, Ber, Babul, Kair, Neem, etc.

2. Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests—These are also called Monsoon forests. Most of the wood of these forests is strong and sturdy. Trees of these forests shed their leaves during summer season. In these forests, trees like Teak, Banyan, Tendu, Saalar, Mahua, Guler, Dhonk, Dhaak, Sal, Custard apple, Bamboo, Indian gooseberry, Mango, Neem, Indian rosewood, etc. are found. These forests are found in Banswara, Dungarpur, Udaipur, Salumbar, Chittorgarh, Alwar, Kotputli, Behrod, Ajmer, Beawar, Jaipur, Sawai Modhopur, Karauli, Bundi and Tonk districts.

3. Semi-Tropical Evergreen Forests- These forests always appear green; therefore, they are called Evergreen Forests. These forests are only found in hilly areas, as hilly region of Abu in Sirohi district. Here, mainly Mango, Bamboo, and Teak trees are found.

Question 3.
What do you understand by wildlife sanctuary? Mention any five wildlife sanctuaries of Rajasthan, their locations and the major wildlife found in them.
Answer:
Wildlife Sanctuary-Sanctuary means fear-free forest. That means wildlife sanctuary is a forest where wild animals can roam safely. For this purpose, forest areas are reserved by the government for the protection of wildlife.
