Question

Let us practice to solve an equation : Equation 3x + 9 = 15 solution x = 2

On both sides | New equation | Solution |

1. Adding 2 | 3x + 11 = 17 | x = 2 |

2. Subtracting 3 | 3x + 6 = 12 | x = … |

3. Multiplying by 2 | 6x + 18 = … | x = … |

4. Dividing by 3 | … = 5 | x = … |

Solution:

On both sides | New equation | Solution |

1. Adding 2 | 3x + 11 = 17 | x = 2 |

2. Subtracting 3 | 3x + 6 = 12 | x = 2 |

3. Multiplying by 2 | 6x + 18 = 30 | x = 2 |

4. Dividing by 3 | x + 3 = 5 | x = 2 |

Question 2.

Solve the following equations

1. [latex]\frac { 2x }{ x+6 }=1[/latex]

2. 10 = x + 3

3. 16 = 7x – 9

4. [latex]\frac { x+5 }{ x }[/latex] = [latex]2\frac { 2 }{ 3 }[/latex]

Solution:

1. [latex]\frac { 2x }{ x+6 }=1[/latex]

By cross(RBSESolutions.com)multiplication

2x = x + 6

⇒ 2x – x = 6 | On transposing x

⇒ x = 6

2. 10 = x + 3

⇒ 10 – 3 = x | On transposing 3

⇒ 7 = x

⇒ x = 7

3. 16 = 7x – 9

⇒ 16 + 9 = 7x | On transposing – 9

⇒ 25 = 7x

⇒ 7x = 25

⇒ [latex]\frac { 7x }{ 7 } =\frac { 25 }{ 7 } [/latex]

On dividing by 7 on both sides

[latex]x=\frac { 25 }{ 7 }[/latex]

4. [latex]\frac { x+5 }{ x }[/latex] = [latex]2\frac { 2 }{ 3 }[/latex]

[latex]\frac { x+5 }{ x }[/latex] = [latex]\frac { 2 }{ 3 }[/latex]

By cross(RBSESolutions.com)multiplication

⇒ 3(x + 5) = 8x

⇒ 3x + 15 = 8x

⇒ 3x – 8x = – 15

On transposing 8x and 15

⇒ – 5x = – 15

⇒ [latex]\frac { -5x }{ -5 } =\frac { -15 }{ -5 } [/latex] | On dividing by – 5 on both sides

x = 3

Question 3.

Lets revise to make mathematical sentence, if there is any number x then fill in the blanks.

5 more than(RBSESolutions.com)the number = x + 5

3 less than the number = __

Half of the number = __

7 less half of the number = ___

4 more than one third of the number = ___

6 more(RBSESolutions.com)than triple of the number = ___

3 less than 5 times of the number = ___

Solution

5 more than the number = x + 5

3 less than the number = x – 3

Half of the number = [latex]\frac { 1 }{ 2 }x[/latex]

1 less half of the number = [latex]\frac { 1 }{ 2 }x-7[/latex]

4 more than one third of the number = [latex]\frac { 1 }{ 3 }x+4[/latex]

6 more than(RBSESolutions.com)triple of the number = 3x + 6

3 less than 5 times of the number = 5x – 3
