Question 1.
Read the following passage and answer the questions:
Indian film industry is one of the biggest in the world, but the quality of our films is often disappointing. Barring one or two exceptions most of our film producers have their eyes on the box-office when they produce films. The result is that they stick to the usual formula of one or two leading film stars, half a dozen songs, one or two crazy dances which are neither Indian nor Western, and a thin incredible story to hold all these elements together. And some of these do succeed in becoming hits. Apparently, what the ordinary man wants is entertainment in the most popular sense and if he gets it, he is satisfied. He is not quality-conscious because he does not know how to appreciate quality in a film.

Question 2.
Read the following passage and answer the questions:
How does television affect our lives? It can be very helpful to people who carefully choose the shows that they watch. Television can increase our knowledge of the outside world. There are high quality programmes that help us understand many fields of study; science, medicine, the arts and so on. Moreover, television benefits very old people, who can’t often leave the house as well as patients in hospitals. It also offers non-native speakers the advantage of daily informal language practice. They can increase their vocabulary and practise listening.
On the other hand, there are several serious disadvantages of television. Of course, it provides us with a pleasant way to relax and spend our free time, but in some countries, people watch the television for an average of six hours or more a day. Many children stare at a television screen for more hours each day than they do anything else, including studying and sleeping. It is clear that the tube has a powerful influence on their lives and that its influence is often negative.
Recent studies show that after only thirty seconds of television, a person’s brain ‘relaxes’ the same way that it does just before the person falls asleep. Another effect of television on the human brain is that it seems to cause poor concentration. Children who view a lot of television can often concentrate on a subject for only fifteen to twenty minutes. Another disadvantage is that television often causes people to become dissatisfied with their own lives. Real life does not seem as exciting to these people as the lives of actors on the screen. To many people, television becomes more real than reality and their own lives seem boring.

Subject : About the air pollution caused by burning plastic wastes
Dear Sir
It will be very kind of you if you please publish my views about the air pollution caused by burning of plastic wastes. Residents of my locality collect plastic wastes in dustbin, but the sweeper of the colony burns them in a vacant plot. It causes a lot of air pollution.
In my view, we must minimize the use of platic materials and not create plastic wastes because it is not easy to dispose plastic wastes.
Thanking you
Yours truly

Should Smoking be Banned ?
Awareness in the world has grown today to condemn smoking because it is injurious to health. It should be banned completely. Most glaring fact is that smoking is dangerous to health. It causes heart disease, bronchitis, lung cancer, etc. A further issue is that smoking costs government millions of rupees to treat the patients for smoking related problems. There is also concern today about passive smoking. Recent research has shown that non-smokers can suffer health problems if they spend long periods of time among the active smokers (people who smoke).
In general, the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the decision as to whether to smoke or not should be for each individual to make. The people employed in the tobacco industry can be given employment opportunities in some other fields so that they could easily quit this industry. Without imposing ban on smoking, it is almost impossible to keep people away from smoking.
