Sir
Sub: Falling standards of education in public schools

I wish to draw the attention of the public in general and authorities in particular to the class commercialization in the good schools renowned for providing quality education.
Nowadays it has become a trend to admit your children to prestigious public schools, which admit students after conducting so many tests and charging a hefty amount as various funds. Although the system appears to be quite fair, restrictive and selective, but the overcrowded classrooms with 60 to 70 students in the primary section tell a different story. Almost every section of each class is in a similar situation. The overcrowding of classrooms adversely affects the academic standards. It is very difficult for any teacher howsoever resourceful to build any rapport in such large classes. The curriculum is covered in a poor manner. Then it has also become a fashion to increase the fees every year.
The academic values are brushed aside with nonchalance and the sole factor that governs the school authorities is the money. Will the authorities look into this sad state of affairs and bring an end to this commercialization of education resulting in falling academic standards?
Thanking you

Yours truly
Rohit Sharma

Sir
Sub: Limiting the number of vehicles and cars

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I want to highlight the damaging effect of the growing vehicles and cars on the environment and the general health of the masses.
The advent of ‘Maruti’ brought a revolution in the road culture of India. With liberalisation of our economy, many Korean, Japanese, American and European companies started producing lacs of vehicles, trucks and cars every year. Within the last two decades, the number of vehicles has reached to an unmanageable limit. The growing prosperity of the middle classes has added to the craze of owning new Fords, Hyundais, Mercedes, BMWs and Hondas. This has led to disastrous results. The smoke these guzzlers emit pollute the air making it unsafe for human use. Respiratory diseases and asthma have shown a marked rise in the recent years. I suggest that the Government must limit the number of vehicles on the roads. Only one car be limited to one family. The government must promote a cheap and comfortable public transport system.
Thanking you
Yours faithfully
Vivek

Sir
Sub: Ban on Tobacco and closure of Tobacco Industry

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I want to highlight that the steps taken by the government against smoking have proved quite inadequate and ineffective Only a blanket ban on the use of tobacco and the closure of tobacco industry will root this evil out of the country.
The consumption of tobacco and tobacco products is growing steadily in India. About nine lakh people die of tobacco related diseases every year. Deadly diseases like cancer have shown a steady rise. Addiction to tobacco, the silent killer, is increasing, particularly among the youths and students. The only way to solve this problem is the closure of tobacco industry and complete ban on smoking and consumption of tobacco.
Thanking you
Yours faithfully

Sir
Sub: Opening of a Public Library in Jaipur

Through the column of your prestigious national daily, I want to highlight the urgent need for opening a public library in Jaipur.
I am a resident of 5, Janta Colony, Jaipur. Mostly people belonging to lower income groups live in this colony. It is difficult to imagine that the people of the area are deprived of having a good public library.
There are quite a sizeable number of students living in this area. They can’t afford to buy books, periodicals and magazines. The high prices of books and magazines dampen their reading spirit and passion. A good library can serve the needs of the people. There are many who like serious reading of the classics. Others like to read Shakespeare, Keats, Wordsworth, Prem Chand and Tagore. Only a good library can serve the needs of all the residents of the area. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate steps to meet the genuine demands of the residents of Janta Colony.
Thanking you
Your faithfully
Ram Lal

Question 5.
You are Mukesh living 13 Sadarpur, Jodhpur. Write a letter to the editor of a national daily expressing your views that hobby should be made a part of school curriculum.

Sir
Sub: Hobby as a part of school curriculum.

A hobby is altogether different from occupation. It is taken up not for profit but for pleasure. It shows one’s hidden talent. The kind of hobby varies from person to person. The common hobbies are gardening, photography and stamp collecting. In my opinion every student should be encouraged to pursue one or the other hobby It can be reading and writing also. The youngsters will enjoy doing the activity of their choice and getting recognition.
But making hobby a compulsory subject is neither practical nor in the interest of students. The students are already over loaded with their studies. Singing, painting and acting should be optional, not a vital part of school life.
Thanking you
Yours truly
Mukesh
