Rajasthan Board RBSE Class 7 English Vocabulary Punctuation and use of Capital Letters

परिभाषा- जब हम लिखते हैं तो कुछ चिह्नों (points, stops या marks) को प्रयोग करते हैं । इन चिह्नों के सही प्रयोग को Punctuation कहते हैं। उचित विराम चिह्नों द्वारा एक sentence को दूसरे sentence से और sentence के एक भाग को दूसरे से अलग किया जा सकता है। सभी विराम चिह्नों के प्रयोग से वाक्य अथवा अवतरण का भाव स्पष्ट हो जाता है तथा पाठक इसे आसानी से समझ लेता है । उनके अशुद्ध प्रयोग से वाक्य का अर्थ बदल जाता है। जैसे

  1. “The teacher,” said the girl, “is talkative.”
  2. The teacher said, “The girl is talkative.”

उपर्युक्त दोनों वाक्यों का अर्थ एक दूसरे से विपरीत है । पहले वाक्य का अर्थ है लड़की ने कहा, “अध्यापक जी बातूनी हैं।” दूसरे वाक्य का अर्थ है अध्यापक ने कहा, “लड़की बातूनी है।” अत: भिन्न-भिन्न चिह्नों का शुद्ध प्रयोग जानना आवश्यक है । निम्नलिखित प्रमुख विराम-चिह्न हैं।।

  1. Full stop (.)
  2. Comma (,)
  3. Inverted commas (“ ”)
  4. Apostrophe(‘)
  5. Question Mark (?)
  6. Examination Mark (!)

1. Full stop [.]

1. Assertive (विधिसूचक) तथा Imperative (आज्ञार्थक) sentences के अन्त में जैसे

(a) Kanti will sing a song. (विधि सूचक)
(b) Hari goes to Agra. (विधि सूचक)
(c) Take your seat. (आज्ञार्थक)
(d) Please give me your pen. (आज्ञार्थक)

2. हस्ताक्षरों के नामों के छोटे रूप (initials) के अन्त में जैसे-
M.K. Gandhi, R. N. Tagore,

3. संक्षिप्त रूप वाले शब्दों (Abbreviations) में जैसे
B.A., M.A., M.L.A., M.P.

2. Comma (अल्प विराम) [,]

1. यदि एक वाक्य में एक ही Part of Speech के तीन या तीन से अधिक शब्द साथ-साथ आये हों और अन्तिम दो शब्द and द्वारा जुड़े हों, तो उनके बीच में Comma का प्रयोग करते है। । लेकिन and के पहले आये शब्द के बाद comma नहीं लगता। जैसे
She is intelligent, honest, truthful and hardworking. They visited Germany, France and Italy.

2. यदि दो शब्दों के जोड़े and द्वारा जुड़े हों, तो उनको अलग करने के लिए Comma का प्रयोग करते हैं । जैसे-
Rich and poor, high and low, young and old will die one day

3. Direct Narration Reporting part of Reported Speech से अलग करने के लिए Comma का प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे
Mohan said to me, “I write a letter.” Kamla said to me, “I am your sister.”

4. वाक्य के आरम्भ में प्रयुक्त Adverb या Adverbial Phrase के पश्चात.Comma का प्रयोग होता है । जैसे
Fortunately, the thief did not enter my house. At last, he reached the top of the mountain.

5. एक ही शब्द को दोहराते समय उनके बीच में Comma का प्रयोग होता है, जैसे-
Come, come my dear, my dear child.

6. Compound sentence 7 Coordinate Clause को अलग करने में Comma का प्रयोग होता है । जैसे
The way was long, and the night was dark. He wanted to buy a pen, but he had no money.

7. Yes तथा No के पश्चात् Comma का प्रयोग होता है; जैसे –
Do you like this book? Yes, I like. Do you go there ? No, I don’t.

3. Inverted Commas [“ ”]

1. Direct Narration में वक्ता के शब्दों (Reported Speech) के प्रारम्भ और अन्त में; जैसे
(a) Shanti said to me, “You are a good player.”
(b) “I shall not go there”, said his sister, “because I have a bad headache.”

2. किसी Quotation को लिखने के लिए; जैसे
The Gita says, “Do your duty.”,

3. पुस्तकों के नाम, निबन्धों तथा लेखों के शीर्षक, पत्रों के नाम, जहाजों के नाम आदि भी Single Inverted Commas के भीतर रखे जाते हैं । जैसे
(A) Have you read “The Gita’ ?
(B) ‘The Hindustan Times’ is a good newspaper.

4. Appostrophe [‘]

1. Nouns के Possessive case (सम्बन्धसूचक) के लिए; जैसे-
Ravi’s book, Ram’s pen

2. कुछ शब्दों को संक्षिप्त बनाने के लिए; जैसे
E’er = Ever I’ve = I have Don’t = Do not It’s = It is ·
Can’t = Cannot Won’t = Will not

3. संक्षिप्त रूप वाले शब्दों को बहुवचन बनाने के लिए। जैसे –
Many M.A.’s and B.A.’s are unemployed.

5. Question Mark (?)

प्रश्न वाचक वाक्यों के अन्त में (?) आता है। जैसे-
who are you?

6. Exclamation Mark (!)

विस्मयादिबोधक वाक्यों/शब्दों के अन्त में (!) आता है। जैसे-
How beautiful the flower is ! Alas ! she is dead.

Capital Letters

Capital Letters का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित प्रकार से होता

1. वाक्य के आरम्भ में, जैसे-
Hari goes.

2. Direct speech या कहावत का प्रथम शब्द लिखने में; जैसे
Mohan said to me, “Where are you coming from ?”

3. Proper Nouns या Proper Adjectives लिखने में प्रथम अक्षर; जैसे-
Harish, English, Indian, Russian.

नोट- यदि Proper Noun या Proper Adjective कई शब्दों का हो, तो प्रत्येक शब्द का आरम्भ का अक्षर capital होगा । जैसे
Mahatma Gandhi, Mahendra Singh Dhoni

4. ईश्वर के लिए प्रयोग किये गये Noun और Pronoun लिखने में पहला अक्षरः जैसे
1. May God grant you success!
2. O God, Thou art kind.

5. Pronoun ‘I’ और Interjection ‘O’ लिखने में; जैसे-0 sleep! come to me.

6. दिनों, महीनों, मेलों, त्यौहारों के नाम का पहला अक्षर; जैसे-Monday, June, April.

7. पुस्तकों, कविताओं, पत्रों, लेखों, अध्याय, कहानियों, निबन्ध, शीर्षक का नाम लिखने में पहला अक्षर; जैसेThe Mahabharat, the Gita, the Hindustan Times. Have you read the story of ‘Godan’ written by Prem Chand ? ।

8. गलियों, बाजारों और जहाजों का नाम लिखने में पहला अक्षर जैसे- Chaura Rasta (सड़क), Chandni Chowk (बाजार)

9. भाषा के नाम लिखने में पहला अक्षर; जैसेEnglish, Hindi, Sanskrit.आदि ।

Exercise 1

Rewrite the following sentences using capital letters and punctuation marks where necessary :

निम्न वाक्यों में आवश्यकतानुसार Capital Letters और विराम चिहनों का प्रयोग करते हुए पुनः लिखिए

  1. yes my first rank stopped to the second
  2. father is he telling lies
  3. do you know what she said
  4. are we actually living papa
  5. are we missing out on real life
  6. we had a fun filled journey
  7. Surbhi nikhil and i enjoyed a boat ride

Answers:

  1. Yes, my first rank slipped to the second.
  2. Father, is he telling lies ?
  3. Do you know what she said ?
  4. Are we actually living, Papa ?
  5. Are we missing out on real life?
  6. We had a fun-filled journey.
  7. Surbhi, Nikhil and I enjoyed a boat ride.

Exercise 2

(Based on the Text Book)

Rewrite the following sentences using capital its letters and punctuation marks where necessary :

निम्न वाक्यों में आवश्यकतानुसार Capital Letters और विराम चिहनों का प्रयोग करते हुए पुनः लिखिए

  1. her three daughters namely – ashu,ratni, and bhagu were at home
  2. no gauri. we cannot do that
  3. lets go to jagdish ji
  4. namaskar sir i am ramesh from dudu.
  5. ramesh you are a good boy.
  6. dont worry mumal.
  7. mahapal was ruled by king mahender.
  8. what does brunch mean
  9. yes my name is kartik
  10. he finished his graduation from rajputana university in 1960

Answers:

  1. Her three daughters namely – Ashu, Ratni and Bhagu were at home.
  2. No, Gauri. We cannot do that.

  4. Namaskar Sir, I am Ramesh from Dudu.
  5. Ramesh, you are a good boy.
